Firstly, it has smoothed out quite a lot from the way I remember it. This one is permanently in my rotation. Comparable to an Is lay Whiskey in smokiness, though if one is looking for notes of peat I recommend C&D's 'Strathspey'. It reminded me of smoking a burnt out matchstick or if you were to smoke the smoke off of a meat smoker. I first tried this in a Ser Jacapo LB Maxima Maxima. I know, "BLASPHEME!" #1. Some time later I thought to break it up and mix some in with some other tobacco as I packed my pipe. It lacks that hint of perique spice that Nightcap has, but is darker and more smokey. LDG - Laudisi Distribution Group The lack of a virginia component is, IMHO, what sets this blend apart from my other latakia-laden favorites: Old Ironsides and Commonwealth Mixture. Somehow, none of the blends I tried hit the spot, offering only a mere tantalizing hint of the Latakia pungency that I was after. This is a very enjoyable smoke, full of smokey Latakia. Those three bowls were quite enjoyable. Now this blend is a real treat though because the burley in it. This is what is left in my mouth while smoking this blend, an odd cooling sensation not unpleasant in any regards, just unexpected and strange. The fact that you can purchase large quantities at bargain prices is also a plus and encourages big purchases for cellaring purposes. It gets better and better with time. In the smoke the Latakia - even though being 75% percent of the blend - really smooth and silky. Haharrrrr!! A beautifully smokey taste with a sweet background and almost barn sawdust background note that burnt down to the bottom with a beautiful creamy mouthfeel. Just finished my 1st full tin of this and it did not take long. Absolutely no indication of bite even when puffing vigorously. It lit ok and burned fairly well. It's alottalatakia, ALOTTALATAKIA!. Made with the Latakia lover in mind, Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with medium strength and a substantial taste. Choose Options. The smell when i first opened lid was a leather like, chemical vinyl type smell. Leaves my pipes dry as a bone. It is pretty straightforward with its flavors , but in an enjoyable way, and as I said before it is a very cool and smooth smoke. Its like a quadruple IPA, and probably should be served with one - the combination of nasty wet brush fire and Lemon Pledge could strip the tastebuds down to oblivion, at which point Pirate Kake would taste good. This is where the hassle becomes worthwhile. I have to admit I sort of got into the spirit of this blend.

While for me Penzance is for special occasions, Pirate Kake is the perfect last smoke of the day for every day. Here in Brazil many confreres saying about this blend and i decided to try. The room note though, will send some running for the door. It burns fine right off the kake but becomes a very tiny touch ammoniated by the end of the bowl owing to being over moist. After a few minutes, my taste buds become overwhelmed and I can't taste anything. The aroma was all latakia and the taste was pretty much the same. Troppo Latakia? Or, at least I thought so. I agree with earlier reviewers who think this is Syrian latakia. I also use Pirate Kake to soup up other tobaccos that I think would benefit from a little more latakia. After trying a few Latakia blends I thought I might be up to the task of trying this tobacco. It's all Latakia. The age has definitely blended the strong latakia together into the others. Tasty and full , with excellent pack and burn qualities . It crumbled up pretty easy and packed up well. Age When Smoked: Fresh off the Pirate Ship. To give it a fare test, I smoked Pirate Kake for almost a week. At first puff, you may think this will be a one-dimensional smoke, but soon the latakia smooths off to a very rich, heady, slightly sweet smoke. Wont bite or get harsh, though there are a couple rough edges here and there. Room note offends everyone and leaves that creosote like aftertaste that I enjoy. Preparing this one for smoking is a chore. Stouter than most of those "late evening" blends and a great way to end the day. Lovely tobacco to smoke but stinks like hell to all around you. If you love Latakia, this is a must try. Surprisingly it is only medium strong. Ill stick to Mountain Camp and Star of the East. I like Latakia, but I wouldn't consider myself one that likes it to totally dominate the blend. If you enjoy a great Latakia blend this one's for you.
